Spam Blocking
Our provider's move to a new email system has reduced some of the spam
reaching your mailbox. Last year, our provider began rejecting mail from
open relays, which are mail servers that are not configured properly.
Open relays make it much easier for spammers to send millions of spam
messages around the world while also making it harder to track them down.
Blocking mail from these open relays allows our provider to reduce the
spam delivered to your mailbox by as much as 70% (your results may vary).
It is unlikely that this action will block any valid email. Many open
relays are servers in faraway countries that are not configured properly,
and you would not normally receive valid mail from those servers. However,
occasionally there will be a small Internet Service Provider (ISP), a
school, a business, or some other source of valid email that will land
in the open relay database. Usually, this is because they have recently
brought a new server on-line or upgraded an old server, and did not configure
it properly. If someone you know uses a server that is blocked, they
will not be able to send email to you until the problem is fixed.
The good news is that the person sending the email to you will get a
bounce message fully explaining the problem. The message will refer them
to this link - http://www.orbz.org/sender.php - and provides instructions
they can forward to their ISP on how to get off the list. When the administrator
of the offending server hears of the problem, they usually act quickly
to make the necessary corrections. Open relays are a spammers best friend,
and a responsible server administrator will want to correct the situation
as soon as possible.
Again, it would be unlikely that you would have a problem receiving
email from your friends or family. Responsible ISPs are very careful
not to run open relays. We are confident you will be happy with the reduction
in spam, and are pleased that we can to provide this new service for
you.
