Winter Readiness - What to do

Save energy with the following low to no-cost tips:

  • Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
    • Set fans to turn clockwise; this pushes warm air down.
  • Use Natural Heat
    • Open curtains and blinds on sunny days to let in the natural warmth of the sun.
  • Reduce Phantom Loads
    • Turn off and unplug non-essential devices, lights, and appliances when not in use.
  • Manage Space Heaters Carefully
    • Space heaters are expensive to run and are designed to heat only small rooms.
  • Seal Up Air Leaks - Save up to 20% per year
    • Caulk around windows and doors.
    • Add or replace weatherstripping.
    • Use draft stoppers or curtains to keep warm air in and reduce heat loss.
  •  Improve Insulation - Save up to 14% per year
  • Optimize Your Thermostat - Save up to 10% per year
    • Install a programmable thermostat.
    • Adjust your thermostat 7-10 degrees lower than your normal setting when you are away or asleep.
    • During waking hours, while you are home, lower your thermostat up to 4 degrees for additional savings. We call this the Four Degrees of Savings! The 30-second video below helps to explain these savings.
